  • 2018 Hess Mini Toy Truck Fire Engine

Thrift store find from what was a 3-pack of 3-inch scaled miniature Hess Toy Trucks for the 2018 holiday season. This is a replica of the Christmas 1977 1/24 scale plastic Hess Toy Truck patterned after a then contemporary American LaFrance or Seagrave, even in plastic it's worth getting for avid fire truck collectors (especially for the 49 cents I paid). The headlights and red "gumball machine" strobe are functional with replaceable button batteries.

That is so cool - was not aware that Hess had offered this 3 inch version! One more to add to the want list!

Thanks! It's roughly the same size as a Road Champs American LaFrance. Hess seems to have offered other interesting trucks in 1/64-ish scale in their Minis range over the years.

I have two of the rearmount aerial in this series, but never (til today) knew there was a pumper in the series! Gosh, now I have to spend the next unknown number of hours searching online for this!

I always thought of myself as a well-informed collector, who would find these things thru repeated searches and accidentally. But, I never doubted the value of 'boards' like Swifty's and this replacement to enlighten our wonderful community!

Thanks for the info on this, I hadn't seen this pumper before. Like Blair, I didn't even know she existed. Now the hunt begins, I let you know if I find a source Mr. Young

I don't like red plastic. It just looks cheap. That being said, I'm more than happy to look past it. This truck looks pretty good, and unlike the original, it doesn't take up a whole load of space. 50 cents wasn't bad at all. Apparently, this came in a three-piece set with a tanker truck (also quite nice) and a racing car transporter. That whole set is going for $50. Honestly and personally, I have never got why the Hess trucks are so collectible; and thus pricey. I know quite a few who collect them. They're generic, plasticky, and just look like something out of a dollar store.

I looked around a bit on the internet and they aren't selling for cheap, that was a steal at $0.49!

Indeed. Can't find it at all by itself, and the 3-pack is about 50 bucks.

Kind of sad - years ago I had a collector friend in the Binghamton, NY area that would send me each of the Hess models even though they were to big for my collecting area. He died a number of years ago - miss the friendship as well as his gracious gifts of the Hess trucks.

Sorry to hear of the loss of your buddy John, but it sounds like you've got some fond memories of him.

I don't collect the big Hess trucks persay. However, I will not hesitate to rescue a 60s-90s or so era Hess truck that I come across at thrift stores or garage sales, which tend to price them extremely low and leave them for kids to trash, break and lose parts to (I have a 1975-76 Hess Toy Truck White Motor Company lookalike tractor trailer with 3 Hess oil barrels that came to me that way, I paid like $3.99 for it, I had a thread about it on the old board IIRC, and am open to anything else Hess from that era at the right price, especially the big version of this fire truck)
