Thrift store find from what was a 3-pack of 3-inch scaled miniature Hess Toy Trucks for the 2018 holiday season. This is a replica of the Christmas 1977 1/24 scale plastic Hess Toy Truck patterned after a then contemporary American LaFrance or Seagrave, even in plastic it's worth getting for avid fire truck collectors (especially for the 49 cents I paid). The headlights and red "gumball machine" strobe are functional with replaceable button batteries.

I have two of the rearmount aerial in this series, but never (til today) knew there was a pumper in the series! Gosh, now I have to spend the next unknown number of hours searching online for this!
I always thought of myself as a well-informed collector, who would find these things thru repeated searches and accidentally. But, I never doubted the value of 'boards' like Swifty's and this replacement to enlighten our wonderful community!

I don't like red plastic. It just looks cheap. That being said, I'm more than happy to look past it. This truck looks pretty good, and unlike the original, it doesn't take up a whole load of space. 50 cents wasn't bad at all. Apparently, this came in a three-piece set with a tanker truck (also quite nice) and a racing car transporter. That whole set is going for $50. Honestly and personally, I have never got why the Hess trucks are so collectible; and thus pricey. I know quite a few who collect them. They're generic, plasticky, and just look like something out of a dollar store.

Kind of sad - years ago I had a collector friend in the Binghamton, NY area that would send me each of the Hess models even though they were to big for my collecting area. He died a number of years ago - miss the friendship as well as his gracious gifts of the Hess trucks.
