  • Mattel Dream Mobile

I noticed this in my HWC email this afternoon. I figured, at first the "Mattel Dream Mobile" was something the designers cooked up based on 1950s designs, but nope. It is based on the first toy car Mattel ever made; in 1953. How cool is that?

The original toy; From what I've looked up; it was available in green, yellow, and red. From what I see, the HW should have clear windows, with blue interior. It's blue glass with a gray interior to me. And, for once, I will say chrome on wheels and base was unnecessary. Hopefully, we see the other colors later on. I can't wait to find this one in the wild--I will have to find the original toy as well.

I really like the original!! The new one is ok too. Would look cool as a RLC car if it was modelled closer to the original.

Interesting, I'd probably get it just for representing their first toy car. Wonder how big the original was, guessing with it being a friction car for the time it was a large size.

They seem to be quite uncommon, but I found one that sold in January (for $102 shipped! But, it was mint with a tatty box) that was listed as being 11" long by 5 1/2" wide. In general, these seem to be rather expensive; with most being $50-60 in even mediocre shape.

          Thanks Cody

I imagine the initial HWs release will be popular, not only by the diecast collectors, but possibly toy collectors in general.

It reminds me of a number of toy cars that were made in the '50's - all with futuristic type designs - most were friction so on the larger size. This would be a neat little Hot Wheels model to have not only because it represents the first toy car Mattel made but kind of a tribute to many of those unique, early space age designs of the '50's. Can't tell from the brief article if this is going to be an HWV exclusive or if we will see it in the main line or even in what I like to call the "upscale line" of models.

Mainline. But, it's apparently just a new release this month. Lots of scalpers have them for anything from $5-15 already. And I'm not paying that...

That would be my other concern - as a mainline - the reality of actually finding it in a store.

Mattel knows its hot and they will produce tons of them, should be able to find one when the initial hype dies down.

Neat. I'll add one to my collection if I come across one. There was a really rough version of the toy this Hot Wheel is based on for sale on the local Facebook market place a week or so ago. I forget how much the seller wanted for it.

My guess is that we will see a spike in values for the original car.

I've been digging retro-futurism lately. I'll have to get this and look for the original car too.
