  • Tomica Pocket Cars 2-Car Garage from the 70s

Found this old Tomy garage playset piece (also launches cars) at an antique mall in Junction City, OR for $8. The cars are loose pieces from my collection, didn't come with it.

While not the kind of realistic stuff I like, I can appreciate the retro futurism of this piece.

I found its original owner on FB. It's going back to him in trade for a redline 280SL.

I rarely ever see Pocket Cars-era Tomica locally (of the 6 or so I have, 5 were found together in a Matchbox carrying case), and period, you just don't see these early playsets!

These playsets weren't as popular as Hot Wheels' or Matchbox's offerings, but much like the JRI/Road Champs, Zylmex and Yatming playsets of a few years later, not too many of these have survived, due in part to materials quality.

Great little garage, interesting to me is I have a Matchbox garage launcher I'd swear was identical to that except in different colors, but not known what box I have it in.

Oh but wait, I found an image on the internet in an ebay auction.

Wonder if it was the same company that made both for the respective brands. The Motorcity name was something Matchbox used on sets back in the late 80's or early 90's, so maybe they bought their old tooling from Tomica, if theirs was from the 70's....Who knows.

This one was made in Singapore. Universal/Kidco/Wheeler/Uniborn had factories there, and Matchbox was under the Universal umbrella during the Motorcity set era. My thoughts are that this is a Universal-made piece that Tomy bought in for the then-nascent US market, and which Matchbox used later on with a decal redesign and plastic color change.
