  • Paypal Friends and Family

Hi, I would like some advice here. I've been purchasing from TTP and eBay for quite a while now using my Paypal account. Never had any issue. Now I want to buy from a TTP seller and he tells me that because it is the first time I buy from him and also because he is shipping internationally (He lives in the US and I live in Singapore), he wants my order to be paid using the Friends & Family option in Paypal. First I have never done that and I don't even know how to do it. Second, besides what the seller stated, is there any other reason why he would request me to do that?
    Thanks

It's likely to avoid or reduce the fees PayPal charges sellers.

He's trying to save himself 3.5% in PayPal fees. You can't do this from the app but you still can, for now, send money to friends and family on the PayPal website. You'll have to enter the amount and address. The logic between domestic and international is that on US domestic shipping, PayPal and eBay discount the postage cost so the fees can be absorbed in a way.

If you don't want to send money with FF or can't figure it out, you can offer to pay him 3.5% extra to cover fees.

I would say not to use friends & family unless you have dealt with them before. If you don't receive anything, you will have no claim. It is worth paying the 3.5% just for peace of mind.

I don't think this guy is out there to cheat me. I have sent him payment and he refunded me saying that I had to use friends & family. I searched the whole Paypal dashboard for that option and could not find it. Eventually, I did a search on the net and it appears that Singapore does not authorise personal payment through Paypal. So there is no Friends & family option for me.

Do not send funds via PayPal gift/friends family for a TTP transaction. Its goes against the sellers commitments when they agree to sell there. Actually they should be reported for asking a buyer to do such a thing. Any questions contact Anita Smith.

That would be fraud. If the seller would rip off PayPal, why wouldn't they rip you off too? I would avoid them.

I agree with jedimario. This seller should raise his price by 3.5% before asking a buyer to risk their safety. TTP was built on integrity and sellers are also bonded to provide money back if a buyer is dissatisfied. I report sales that say "Sold as is" and they become edited or deleted. It would be nice to know this sellers screen name so I can avoid them in the future regardless of cars they have for sale at any price.

I have asked TTP for advice and awaiting their answer. The thing is I have checked this guy's credentials as a seller and everything seems normal, so I don't want to create unnecessary trouble. I'll let you know how this resolves. Thanks all for your advice.
