  • Game - so you think your car is rare?

Let's post a car/casting that might be rare and see if someone can post the same car. Plays like king of the hill except with multiple cars to keep things moving.

I'll start with something mundane. 1970s Chevy Camaro 7Up promo that I think is made by Golden Wheels.

Post a similar car or any car/casting you think is rare. No customs or HW pink Beachbombs from Google images allowed.

This one is probably the rarest of all in my collection, not counting customs or aftermarket printed liveries.

ASM was a short-lived manufacturer out of Brooklyn that only produced a 1968 Chevy truck as a promo for GM. Most in collections here came from an eBay seller in CT. I think that one hoard probably represents most that have ever been made available for sale. I suspect they had a lot of unsold stock when they closed up shop.

Various versions in quite a few colors were sold--pickup, pickup w/camper, box truck, dump truck, and utility truck. Many were low quality and missing bits. Mine doesn't have an interior, and it doesn't roll smoothly.

If the 2% White Lightning number Round 2 was publishing around the time this was produced held true for this release, there are only a few dozen of these things. Quite the conundrum for our resident BWF experts.

It helps that for a couple of years I was buying from former employees, so I have a number of genuinely rare pieces

This one is fun...at a glance I don't think most guys, even the ones familiar with this issue, would notice. The green color is wrong. It is a paint trial that was changed before production.
The image file limits have been reset. Upper limits now are 100,000 when we have some images that exceed 5,000,000. I've set the pixels for no more than 1000 across the longest side, so if you resize to that all should be well. (The limits are larger than what I typically use, and my images turn out just fine, so I know it shouldn't be a problem)

        Thank you for your understanding.

As for regular "production" models, this one is considered by some to be one of the rarest Corvettes

ID:	537862Burslem / Canada Real Types, forerunner of Hubley Real Toys. Because of the rarity, perhaps the condition issues and missing windshield can be forgiven. The model dates to when the car was new on the streets, and aside from Tootsietoy the only 3 inch or smaller version in diecast available at the time.

Another "rare" production issue...Budgie Horsebox (reworked Pantechnicon tooling). The story is the factory caught fire not long after this model was produced, and the tooling for this and many other Budgie models were lost. In terms of attractiveness there are prettier Budgie models in the line, but for a Budgie completist this is undoubtedly the most difficult to find in nice shape because so few were made to begin with.

Sharing a story similar to that of Authentic Scale Models above, Kenner began a line called Super Sports in the late 1960s. Only 3 models made it to market before Kenner pulled the plug in response to the brand new at the time Hot Wheels redlines.

Click image for larger version Name:	DSCN7855.jpg Views:	0 Size:	32.3 KB ID:	537987 This is the open wheel racer. While I have on very infrequent occasion seen other examples of the Dodge pickup and the Pontiac Firebird over the years, I have not seen another example of this open wheel racer.

ID:	538092 Bingo. Not exactly rare in the strictest sense, but most certainly uncommon. Those I have were a gift from my step-daughter directly from China. I've only seen examples like those I have on two other occasions, and one further variant of one of the models on another occasion. I'm fond of this little Fiat, most of the other models except a VW New Beetle are Asian automakers, notably Daewoo.

Models change, cost cutting attempts are made, and the company eventually either sells out or dies. By the time this was made by Playart, that company was at the end of it's lifecycle. There are a tiny handful of Playart models that are more rare than this, but not many.

Yatming was about to close shop as this model and a handful of others were created and packaged...and did not go to wholesale. It was only after Yatming closed their doors that these models trickled out into the marketplace, they never made it onto store shelves.

These are borrowed images, they do not belong to me, I do not possess any of these models.

Those familiar with Hot Wheels likely recall the breakfast cereal premiums celebrating the Petty racing family, released in the mid '00s. What you see in these images were "some of" the models used to calibrate and align the machinery that put the models into the cereal boxes. These models above were never intended for commercial release, and once the machine was properly adjusted these were to be destroyed. The models you see above were rescued from the trash by employees of the cereal company...what you see in the images is likely all that remain, though since these are seller's images (from years ago), these are likely disbursed by now into collections around the country if not the world.

This was the "it" Supercar from right around 1990, powered by what was at the time a very exotic twin turbo variant of the Cadillac Eldorado front drive converted to power the rear. Supercars are like fashion models, they change with the season, and something shinier and newer came along and the Avtech was forgotten.

This model graced the mainline (twice counting wheel variants) and in an exotic car themed 5 pack, none of which would have come about were it not for the Vector company first commissioning Mattel to create a 500 piece promo run in silver to advertise this 4 wheel rocket ship. It took me more than 20 years from first learning about the promo issues to finally find this example in a Mattel employee's collection. Unicorns do exist!
