I prefer the lighthearted, bright-colored '70s-era versions to the olive drab military-style models.

I realize the Type 181 was originally designed to be a military vehicle, but in olive drab it just looks too much like a WWII-era Kubelwagen for me to be comfortable with it.

The yellow/red/orange/blue colors of my youth date back to when "The Thing" was a goof, not a throwback to a nation's very dark past.

I realize the Thing is based on the Kubelwagen
but I think of it as a square Beetle

I like the light blue version - to me The Thing was meant to be a fun vehicle to enjoy the pleasures of life in! It was unique and unusual and funky and quirky when it came out - a great ride to leave the stresses of life behind for a little bit!

I like this casting, but am missing most variations.

I remember when I was a kid, riding in one of the first Things in the US. The dealership my dad worked at received one of these before they went on sale, and we drove it out to what I think was Ontario Motor Speedway for some PR event at the track. I don't recall much about that day, but I do remember thinking how cool it was with all the looks we got as we drove there & back.
I collect what I like, and I like what I collect.
