  • How do you feel about non-functioning hoods / no engines?

I have noticed that recent introductions of Greenlight do not feature opening hoods / detailed engines (Caprice, VW Golf, 2019 Silverado) and painted on headlights, which is interesting because the LeMans Safari has an opening hood AND opening tailgate, along with clear plastic headlights (be still my heart!!) I have mixed feelings about a trend toward non-functioning hoods. I completely understand that to remain competitive, Greenlight must raise prices or decontent its product as production costs increase. Consumers in general seem to balk more at increased prices rather than a less expensive product.

Auto World eliminated boxes, while M2 Castline seems to have raised its prices, at Walmart at least, but they haven't introduced many new products recently. Diecast has become a competitive business with all its players and as much as I love the realism / detail of Greenlight, I am wondering if I would be reluctant in paying an increase of a dollar or two at the checkout counter. Does quantity of models or quality of design influence your wallet more?

You asked,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Some GL casting did not have opening hoods ten years ago,,for example the 69-72 C10's. Early castings always had painted on headlights. Greenlight has made improvements in big areas that I commend them for. Model specific wheels are now installed on most models. Sadly, the Javelin never got a proper AMC wheel. Separate side glass on new releases is a nice touch although they still haven't perfected it on some cars (Datsun Z and Monaco/Fury). Sad to see AW's boxes gone but their product makes up for it. GL supplies a box for it's "Busted Knuckles" cars but the Cadillac won't fit in the box. If you don't buy "Coke" cars, M2's seem to be in line price wise, even at WM and the stock "Drivers" are bargains. I recently ordered six diecast cars: three AW, two GL and one M2. That's about the ratio I've been buying lately.

In part it's a VW thing. They extract a heavy licensing fee and this is probably affecting the model's level of detail.

I wish that more VW models would get produced. The Golf/Rabbit has been done by several companies. How about a 1:64 scale Scirocco Mk2, Jetta Mk1, 411, Corrado, Quantum sedan or wagon?

The VW licensing/marketing folks aren't doing the company any favors in my opinion.

Interesting. Thanks for pointing that out. I didn't think about licensing fees playing into that. I had hoped Greenlight would do some Mercedes models (they did the 1/43 220 Convertible from "The Hangover"), but nothing seems to come down the pipeline.

I do like the Golf, but its been done A LOT all of a sudden (Schuco 1/64, Matchbox, Greenlight). But I guess a lot of good models rather than no representation in 1/64.

Didn't GL do a USDM Golf Mk.1, whereas the Schuco (and the others) are all European market Mk.1s?

I checked the Pontiac Safari and apparently the hood is cast shut on the Estate Wagons singles. Re; the Golf, GL's current release is packaged as a 1974 Golf; we had the Rabbit nameplate in the US.

I don't mind it too much if It's a model I really want but.... what I really don't like is HotWheels has eliminated many of their opening hood cars and the ones where the body comes off. Saving money with less parts to make...I get that.....but..just a bummer. The 65 Mustang convertible now has a plastic base and non-opening hood and the Mini's body does not come off like it used to and again....plastic base now.

It's just about like anything else out there. When the all mighty dollar comes into play one way or another, anything and everything from the music industry to NASCAR racing goes to pot.
I was never into this hobby at any time for money or value of any car. I bought and collected what I liked. I don't really care at all for opening doors on any 1/64th car and if it has an opening hood that opens and closes well, and fits good it's ok with me, but I can take it or leave it. I've been collecting diecast and plastic kit cars of various scales for 55 years or more and never got tired of it. What I am getting tired of is the cost of a 1/64th car pushing 10 dollars each and a plastic model pushing 25-30 dollars. I figure I have over 13,000 cars and that's more than enough to last me the rest of my time enjoying them. I've lost allot of interest is running to the toy isle everytime I walk into a store. If I do see something I like well I will resort to ebay or a dealer I know well...

FYI the hood does open on the Golf.

                  This thing is tiny. I dare say it looked bigger in the package. https://i.imgur.com/wPUxp78.jpg https://i.imgur.com/WMcIAK8.jpg https://i.imgur.com/PPL0OWd.jpg https://i.imgur.com/k343WUX.jpg https://i.imgur.com/510Gq67.jpg https://i.imgur.com/o1KQfUB.jpg https://i.imgur.com/LWZXFkC.jpg https://i.imgur.com/HRCpQFG.jp

If I am paying more than 4 dollars for a car, something should open.

No massive gaps, misaligned panels and extra parts to bend or break? Feels good man

So I take it you've never bought a Kyosho or Tarmac Works?

Or Tomica Limited Vintage, for that matter.

To be frank, I couldn't care less.
