  • Mercedes 380 SEL - Final Run

Here we have the last release of the Mercedes-Benz 380 SEL (W126). It was part of the Final Run series in 1999.

Please pay attention to the license plate. It says "AVTZAYN".
If you had to read "AVTZAYN" out loud, you would pronounce it "A-Vee-Ta-Zane". That sounds like the german phrase "Auf Wiedersehen", which is the german equivalent of "goodbye".

I think that's a pretty creative and well-fitting license plate for the last release of a german car.

The message from the license plate is cool! I don't recall ever seeing this one on the pegs in the day - otherwise I probably would have grabbed it.

And this one is not bad looking either, and the licences plate was a neat way to finish, it seemed like some of the Final Runs went a bit wild on colors and graphics, like the ambulance. The Mercedes Unimog was pretty good looking as this one is too as I recall.

I really liked that casting. To see it go was a bummer along with the other classic Merc.

PJ,not every store carried the final runs for 1999.they did not have a regular mainline collector's number.

I recall seeing it in a KayBee in 1999 / 2000. I can vaguely place the date as I recall where I was working at the time (no, not at Kaybee . . . I happened to take a weekend drive and stopped at a mall in a neighboring city).

I didn't like the concept of destroying the molds and thought it was a bit too much of a sales gimmick that I quickly passed on this. Besides, I had a couple of the originals that were favorites. I used them as JR Ewing's car!!!!!! Dallas hooked me first with the cars as a kid. Gearhead kids like me didn't even need to understand the plot.

                Thanks for your comments guys!

Agreed, it was a bummer that Mattel destroyed the toolings. The Stutz Blackhawk was another great casting that had its last appearance in the Final Run series.

Nice silver with gold UH wheels example Jeff!

Speaking of the Stutz, I'm including a photo of the BMW 850i - another Final Run model.

Thanks for pointing out Dan! You're completely right - those are gold Hot Ones! Not sure why I've thought they were Ultra Hot wheels. Thanks.

i was thinking about these.and recalled that this series did not go over that well due to the high price of the cars..i believe it was 4.99 or 5.99 plue taxes.after that they made the final run cars part of the mainline and gave them collector numbers.
