  • Thrift Store Find- Pressed Steel Postal Jeep

I haven't found anything worth buying at a thrift store besides CD's in a long while, but this caught my eye yesterday. Roughly 1/20 - 1/24 scale this coin bank was in remarkably good shape besides the partially torn sticker on the rear and a missing plug (to remove the coins) on the base. $3.99 was a good enough price to bring it home.

Found another one on the Bay for reference.. Click image for larger version

Never been to this part of the forum before; Postal Diecast is not something I typically collect, but I would have purchased for that price as well. The model looks great, and finding a new plug for the bottom shouldn't be too big of an issue. I find myself buying more and more of these types of metal cars whenever I come across them; usually in the house decor section of Hobby Lobby and TJ Maxx.

Awesome find! Looks great, aside from the bulging headlamps. Better than the plastic junk that the USPS sells today. The current Chinese-made LLV promo is all-plastic and kinda cheap. Didn't stop me from buying two--gave my Dad one and kept one for myself. They showed up at several different clearance/outlet retailers here locally for around $3 each.

In the past 4 years, I've only been to Goodwill, and that's just once. A total diecast blackhole. We have a couple of newer consignment/thrift stores that do carry some older toys that I plan to hit up soon. Partly to shed some excess pieces I need to get rid of in bulk; but I'll likely buy some stuff. Planning on getting rid of about 75% of my newer stuff, but plenty more 1980s and older stuff is more than welcome. I am going to try very hard to avoid pressed steel if I find some when the price is right. I have absolutely no space for the things.

There is one consignment store located in a former supermarket that looks pretty promising. Also helps that there's a collectibles dealer and an indoor flea market in the same strip mall.

        Hey Cody,

Can you post a picture of the plastic one you referenced? I don't think I've seen that one yet.

        Thanks!
        John

I will have to find what box it's in, but I'll try to find it. I know that I boxed most of my larger scale USPS items up save for just my old Matchbox LLV some years ago.

Despite there for some time, Magic Mart and Tuesday Morning being full of them, they're hard to find now.

Here's an eBay listing in the meantime.

Definitely interesting - I would for sure pick one up for a few bucks since I am an addict. A hard pass at $15 now though. Thanks for posting Cody!
