  • an alarming trend . . .

I stumbled on the NYPD 1990 Chevrolet Caprice at Hobby Lobby yesterday, and when I opened it, I was surprised that there was no opening hood on this model. Personally, I am all right with this, but I am wondering how others accept this, especially if this is a trend. I'd be okay with GL featuring opening hoods only on some models, but deleting these features completely I am not sure how I would feel. I mean, we're big kids and like the play value. For instance, I am LOVING the GL 1977 LeMans Safari with opening hood AND tailgate. But when we continue to pay $5 to $7 for these when other adult collectibles are significantly higher in price and don't offer moving parts, I think it will be do we stay with the old price and lose content or prices increase. I'm afraid that the trend is often to cheapen the product than raise prices.

Like Tomica and M2, some do, some don't. But typically, it is things such as trucks and SUV's that don't. Most passenger cars do; although I really don't own that many GL "street" cars. But GL tends to do it right. I've had M2s with both doors that seemed bent, not to mention the horrid gaps. I've had AW's I thought I'd need to go get the Jaws of Life in order to get the hood to open (in fact, I thought my Mach 1 had a sealed hood at first), and the quality on Matchbox Basics Plus is a little rough with the opening parts--most were really stiff, and didn't "snap" on closing like most older MBs do. Yet, I've not ever had a GL that had trouble with its hood. Since the Crown Vic and Monaco have opening hoods--you'd think the Caprice would.

I suspect in part, it's cost cutting. It's why finding a decent Matchbox casting these days is so hard, and with Tomica now being regularly stocked at WM, I'm buying more and more of them instead. But seriously, GL is among the best value for the money in diecast. They offer a little bit of everything, at a really decent price.

Due to the recent budget cuts,
the rising cost of electricity, gas, and oil, plus the
current state of the economy, the light at the end
of the tunnel has been turned off.

I completely agree that GL is among the best value for the money in diecast. If you were from the dark ages like myself who didn't grow up with adult collectibles, this is a total gift from heaven. Personally, I'd pay a little more to keep the extra features, but I know that with the fierce competition in a niche market like adult collectibles, GL is concerned that raising the price in order to continue offering the level of features and quality would lose customers. It seems the trend with most companies except in the luxury market (be it ice cream in smaller containers at the same price, or products that simplify the manufacturing products) is to lower prices.

It will be interesting to see where it all goes. Fortunately, GL listens to the collectors and cares!!!
