  • Tailboard Talk November 2019 - "Knock it Off"

Each month here in the Apparatus Bay we host a session of "Tailboard Talk" where we focus on diecast emergency vehicles (Police, Fire, EMS, or Rescue) with a specific theme.

This month we will take a look a copies or knock-off models of diecast emergency vehicles. The old saying goes "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery". While we all know that companies making knock-off models are not doing it to flatter anyone, but simply to make a dollar. Nonetheless, these knock off models make for some interesting finds and provide even more variations in our collections.

So, join us this month for part 1 of "Tailboard Talk" as we feature copies or knock-off models of diecast emergency vehicles.

Please remember the general rules of thumb:
    • Limit photos to one vehicle at a time (do not show multiple variations of a casting all at once)
    • Once you've posted a pic please wait until another collector has posted before you add another (until the last few days of the month when anything goes).
This will allow as many people as possible to participate and will prevent this feature from becoming a one man show. Have fun!

Here's a knock off of the Corgi Fire Heroes 1966 GMC pumper model from a company called T.NA out of China -

Slightly bigger than the Corgi model, but with the same markings and numbering you can definitely tell where they got their "inspiration" from -

As you can see, the quality is a step or two down from the Corgi model and the rear bed of the model is made in plastic -

in all, it's not a bad copy and displays nicely along with its Corgi cousin.

This International "brush fire truck" knockoff is by SunQ. Love the double-barrel 'water cannon' on top...

I enjoy hunting down these knock-offs too Blair! here's another one from SunQ that even copied the Department name of "Reinert County", but they did mix it up a bit and put "RESCUE" on the rear cab doors -

on a side note, here's a little bit of useless Matchbox trivia... the name "Reinert County" that was used for this MB model was not from an actual department but it was the name of one of the secretaries at Mattel and they used her name on the first variation of this casting.

Copycats of Lesney castings are a new spinoff for me; and a fun one. A lot are Maisto that I have, many of which are still being made. Some, such as Gordy-Mite were being made concurrently wtih MBX; and are pretty bad. But I wonder how many are, in reality, sold toolings?

            Matchbox's 29 "Fire Pumper".

The Matchbox and Gordy-Mite 833. Been meaning to pick up the Maisto copy forever--but I've only seen that Fire Pumper copy in a 9-pack.

The Gordy-Mite is cheap plastic, axles are soft and flexible. Lots of flashing from the tool that was not removed. And, I knew Gordy-Mites in general are really crude.

Note: MBX has been drilled apart and glued together. Had to fish out the Roto-Ray from the inside of the cab and glue it back to the roof when I got it.

Kaixin (I think--could be a copy of a copy) "Desert Thunder" I do not own an MBX equivalent.

Do not try to adjust your monitor--it does have a slight purple tint to it for some reason. I suspect a slight amount of purple paint got into the mixer.

It came in this gift set I got a year or two ago from Food Lion. In keeping with the one-model-at-a-time rule, I will cover the other copies (entirely Mattel-era MBX) later, as I do have MBX equivalents of the Jeep and ARFF somewhere in the truckload of Jammers I own. Just posting packaging for information purposes (I think this will become a very handy thread). I've really wanted some of the Kaixin Boley IH copies--namely rollback wrecker and ambulance if anyone has them. I've only seen the rollback in my parts, and it was in a big $20 Ja-Ru playset from CVS. I didn't pay $5.99 for the set, either. Think I got it for $3 in Jan-Feb after Christmas.

Nice one! Those Muky might be knockoffs--but they sure don't sell for a knockoff price. They're as expensive as the real deal. And Argentinian postage--Sheesh!

Here's the knock off of the Mack B open cab pumper -

When dealing with knock-off models I guess you should expect them to take short cuts where ever they can. Now that I've shown the three of these models I want to point out one such short cut... they used the Chicago FD hose bed section for each of these models -

and funny enough, there is a typo on the sides of the rear section... Instead of CFD it reads CFO, but not the case on the tailboard section where it reads CFD -

No doubt Cody, for being knock-offs they sure fetch a premium price!

Holy typographical errors Batman! I just noticed all of the typos on the Chicago pumper -

The knock off spells it Chicogo. and it also misspells Dept as DPRT. I'm surprised they spelled GMC correctly, haha.

Now I need to check all of these models
