  • Matchbox needing missing parts

Pretty sure the "before" photos were posted at Swifty's during my September trip. Reason for posting today is that the missing parts arrived, and the new photos show the results. Even thought some of these are beaters, having all the bits attached gives me that 100% secure feeling in both summer and winter.

The only thing that really didn't work out was the horses for the Leyland Horse Box. I asked the supplier if they were smaller than the ones for the Pony Trailer (as the originals were) but only got a vague, "yes they were included in your order" type response. Well, they were too big to fit inside the Leyland truck like the originals did. One other minor gripe is that I have ordered the orange canopies for the M-B truck and trailer before, and they just don't fit 100% correctly - they are just a skosh off. Other than that, everything was great. Especially pleased that the VW tires just basically snapped into place, and the Snow Track treads went on easily and looked good too. Overall "chuffed factor" was high.

Before - all were missing bits...(the UNIMOG was complete, just ugly)...

Snow Trac - broken tow hitch. Can't have everything.

After - the missing bits arrived from the UK...

    Random comments:
    • "Snow Trac" is cast into the body (first version)
    • Horses in the bag fit the Pony Trailer but too big for the Leyland Horse Box
    • Taxi decal went on easily
    • The VW "137" is a decal, not the later sticker (tow hook is munged though)

Front tires on the VW are new. All else is original. Rough and ready!
Would like to find the Monte Carlo tag decal for the front. Anyone know of a supplier?

Snow Trac cast in body (whoopie!) - nice treads though - "treads make the man" - or something.

Very nice - neat that so many replacement parts are available and that most of them worked well for you. Reminds me that I should go through my collection and make a list of parts I need on a variety of models - treads especially for the Snow Trac and Caterpillar tractors.

Thank you. The replacement parts cost more than the models in most cases, but when a model includes the extra bits, the "value" is greater than the sum of the model and the missing pieces.

And another thing - the detail of the hunter and his dog for the Studebaker Lark Wagonaire was top notch.

It's great to see all these old models with a fresh new look again. If I may suggest something, it appears you have installed your new Snow Trac treads inside out, Typically the ridges go on the outside to grip the ground as it were, they probably just got twisted somewhere along the way.

Thanks. Thought I checked against some online photos. Guess I saw them inside out. Need to look closer next time. Thumbs up.

Most replacement parts are easy for a seasoned collector to see. I don't think they add any real value to the model. Personally I'd never buy a model with replacement parts. But they do show well.

Just found this video of the real Snow Trac.

Note the knobby side of the tracks are on the inside, which makes sense from an operational point of view. May not be original for the Matchbox though.

Almost all of my treaded models have lost their treads - and one of these days I will order the replacement treads to make them complete again. Also - if I were to ever sell those they would be noted as having replacement parts.
