  • Speedtrack - Slot Cars

For those who hadn't a clue, like me before I found these at a train show some years ago, Matchbox actually did make slot cars at one time, I believe back in the early 80's.. I learned from when I posted them on Swifty's years back that they didn't work on standard track, guess you needed to buy Matchbox track as well, so I suspect they wouldn't have sold well with that in mind, but I don't know..

Those are some unique pieces to have in your collection. I do remember those - also seem to recall they were not overly popular because they could only be used on the special Matchbox track.

I have never seen these either. Really cool cars for sure. From the looks of the card back pictured it looks like a standard Tyco HO track. I remember the clips on them just like pictured on the card. They always broke off too. I never seen any Matchbox track in any toy or hobby store either. Just because I never seen any MB track doesn't mean they didn't make track though...

Steve I think the deal was that the contacts on the Matchbox slot cars don't have the same spacing as normal cars, so I guess that is why they only worked on Matchbox track....I don't have any experience with this myself, it is just what I'm remembering from the other time I posted these.

This set has some sort of roof attachment that probably triggered something overhead:

To answer the questions about use with other tracks, here's a side-by-side comparison of a Tyco track and a Matchbox track. The electric contacts are much closer together on the Matchbox track:

Here's the Matchbox car sitting on the Tyco track. Note how the contacts are between the power rails:

Finally, here's a boxed track set. Note that they are battery powered with 4 "D" cells, which makes them 6 volt. Tyco and Aurora tracks run anywhere from 12 to 20 volts and up, so these little motors would probably burn out quick.

Thanks for showing the differences in tracks RV, and seeing all the different models of course, I wished I would have found the police car there when I got mine, but what I got is all that was hanging there.

I don't know that the motor would burn out if someone somehow got them to work on the 12 or 24v track, since as soon as you pulled the trigger the model would probably fly off the track too fast to even cause much harm to the motor. Lol
