  • Bert Finds the Matchbox

Okie-doke. We will now begin the process of re-posting Bert's pix from past years posted previously at Swifty's Garage, which was gobbled up by tapatalk. Though some have seen these pix before, it's been a while. October 2015 to be exact.

    Ahem...

Though he was glad to have his posing hiatus extended by the move to VB, Bert's nursing a bit of "trauma" at the thought of having to get used to a new format. His hiatus won't last forever, so there is still a need to nudge him into a posing mood.

I've elected to begin the move with Matchbox.

I'd like to maintain the order in which these pix per posted before, so this will begin at the beginning. My apologies to those of you who have seen these already. We beg your indulgence.

Whenever I think Bert needs cheering up, a convertible will often do the trick. Or a Camaro.

    How about a Camaro convertible...

    "Lemme guess. Um... 1/63 scale?"

    Good eye, Officer.

Bert the Cop is a 6'4" police officer who's 1/64 scale beat is somewhere in SoCal (though it may move in the future). As seen here his height includes his cap and the "cushion" he stands upon. That's what he calls it; a "cushion". Says it keeps him from getting sore feet, but I suspect that's an excuse to gain a couple inches of height. It's difficult enough to get him to pose with these cars, so I don't make an issue of it. Bert likes the color blue. So much so, that when he speaks, the text comes out blue. Don't ask us to explain it.

Another favorite subject with us is "car/trucks"...

MB says this 1970 El Camino is "1/69", but I think that may apply only to the length. Width-wise it looks very close to 1/64. It does appear to be a bit fat when viewed from above. The original tooling got very worn judging by more recent editions using it. Though the casting has been retooled with a plastic bed, its proportions have remained the same. This is one we wish MB had retooled in more strictly 1/64 scale proportions.

But at least they kept the bed open.

"More recent editions? You have more of these, kid?"

      Patience, Officer. Patience.

The 1/63 figure on this Mercury Sable wagon seems credible enough...

If accurate, then the Chrysler Atlantic is a fairly big car.

In a classic (imo) scale: 1/64!

"I notice the front doors open, kid."

            Uh, yeahhh...

"So that means I can get innit."

            Yeah, so?

            "So how come no keys?"

Hafta ask the guy who drove it here, Officer.

Once again the scale is stated to be 1/64, but this Firebird may just have a bit of the "MB stretch" width-wise.

"Doesn't look bad from here, kid. And it's a T-top! Know what they call a T-top in England?"

              Um... uh... a "bloomin' T-top"?

              "Get out of here."

I remember when I first saw an SUV with the Mercedes-Benz badge on it. I thought, "Well, that settles it. SUVs are here to stay."

Matchbox (that other MB) wasted no time rendering the things in miniature. This ML 430 is 1/62 (not 1/64) according to the base, but the slight "bigness" is hard to notice.

                "I noticed it, kid."

You seem to be a bit more sensitive than usual today, Officer.

There's so much that's done so well on this model. The tamped head/tail lights, the color, the painted windshield frame, the separate grill insert...

Too bad the scale is 1/60 (per the base.)

"I didn't think this car was supposed to be so... big."

                    ... let's be prepared.

Matchbox seems to like the Jeep as much as they do (or did) Mercedes-Benz. How many different Jeep models has MB issued over the years? We don't know exactly.

This "Grand Cherokee" is labeled "1/58" on the base, which is surprising since MB usually renders vehicles that are big in 1/1 scale in a size smaller than 1/64, not bigger. A bogus scale spec? Did they mean "1/68"?

Wheel-wise, it seems to be outfitted more for city traffic than trail busting.

"I don't see any dirt on those rims, that's for sure."

Maybe they had it washed on the way over, Officer.

"Well then, that was nice of them, wasn't it?"

"You can always find something to complain about, can't ya?"

Who's complaining, Officer? Besides, if I wanted to complain about something I'd complain that this Mercedes 600 SEL is only 1/67.

                      "See? SEE?"

I know he's a cop, but I never thought Bert would go all "attitude police" on me.

... but this BMW 5 Series sure is pretty, anyway. And since the front doors open Bert could get inside and see if his feet can reach the pedals! Bet they could, even if it is a tad oversize.

                        Well, Officer?

"You know kid, for some reason, my knees are kinda stiff today."

Though the casting is stated to be 1/63, the wheels on this Camaro Z-28 still seem a bit big. But it's so ORANGE, I can live with it.

"Jumping the gun a bit with the 'ORANGE', aren't you, kid?"

In the world of cars, Officer, it's never too early for ORANGE.

MB seems to like "1/63" for their scale figure when they make a Camaro. Not always, but more than other scales. But it's a favorite anyway.

Too bad there's a rough spot in the front edge of the hood.

"Looks like somebody got a little heavy-handed with their flash removal tool."

If only they'd done it slightly smaller (it's 1/60).

"No problem, kid. It's a van. Nobody'll notice it's too big."

But it's supposed to be a minivan.

"MINI van? Whoever heard of such an idea?"
