  • Speed Rebels - Playing Mantis

Speed Rebels...technically not Johnny Lightning, although certainly made by Playing Mantis.

    Model list includes:

    Alley Cat
    Big Boss
    Goat Buster
    Rat Attack
    Speed King
    Street Freak
    The Dominator
    The Spoiler
    Vicious Villain
    Wing Thing

10 models, 14 colors each...140 total major color variations. I will show lots of minor color shade variations as well.

The story has been told before, the short version is these are the original first run tools. Tom Lowe decided they were too small, and ordered them redone. The "bad" tools sat to the side for some years until someone got the idea to make them pay for themselves. VERY short run challenge to Hot Wheels and Matchbox, only on the pegs for about a year, PM never intended to go head to head with Mattel...but they did pay off the tooling, and even made a profit.

    In no particular order:

Goat Buster...I count 13 major variations...

It appears I am missing this one, according to Wyatt:

The image file limits have been reset. We have over-limit warnings for the past 3 months and I've had to lower the image file limits. Upper limits now are 100,000 when we have some images that exceed 5,000,000. I know I've mentioned many times before, but it is very important to downsize images - doesn't matter if they are hosted elsewhere or here. I've set the pixels for no more than 1000 across the longest side, so if you resize to that all should be well. (The new limits are larger than what I typically use, and my images turn out just fine, so I know it shouldn't be a problem)

    Thank you for your understanding.

              Next up is Rat Attack.

I count 8 variations. Seems this model doesn't come to me as often as the others. I thought about why that might be, and the only thing I can guess is because this was the only small scale diecast of this generation of Chevy Nova for several years, until Hot Wheels came out with one sometime later that they like to be stingy with. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

                  Here come d' Big Boss.

For a model that was supposedly flying out of the country to the Puerto Rican racetracks, I've managed to find quite a few of these over the years...so much for seller's hype, I guess. I count 13 variations, I'm missing:

Last, but by no means least, is my particular favorite of the bunch, the Street Freak. I thought it was a bold choice at the time, and still think it has stood up well over the years.

I wish to thank Wyatt for the use of his images, at JLCollector.net

I am indebted to Pegers, for helping find so many issues that have eluded me over the years.

I've been at this little side collection for over 20 years. Variationitis has me finding subtle shade variations, as you can see in the pics, some are more obvious than others, most no doubt have to do with the candy paint.

I ask because I have one that is definitely the dark maroon that was on lots of cars in the 90s and that picture makes that one look a bit pale. To compare it to something a bit more common, it is pretty close to the MB Quasar with an extra little dash of purple.

Having said that...the black interiors that are not 5 pack are hobby only exclusives. The yellow glass were some odd set that got put together and thrown out there, and I don't know where the 5 packs were marketed, and when it comes to colors all bets are off...some like the white Cougar (Alley Cat) were not repeated on any other model.

Of the ten "common" issues, each were found in ten colors, all have white interiors and clear glass. There are 3 reds, I like to call rootbeer, lipstick and a dark red I don't know what to call. I think the one you have singled out is the darker red, and that color can be found on any of the models. The candy paint does lend itself to a range of shade variations.

And that dayglow green on the Mustang seems like every one is a shade different...
