Here's an opportunity to tell this story again.

Back in the days of JLTalk, I don't recall if it was Jeff Koch or Mac Ragan that told us the Speed Rebels line was some of the first original tooling Tom Lowe and the new Playing Mantis had made up. When Tom Lowe saw how small the models turned out (they came in closer to 1/72 scale +/-), he ordered them remade. The original first run tooling was laid to the side and forgotten for a few years.

"Somebody,"...we were not told the idea to do something with that tooling to at least pay for itself sometime after Playing Mantis and the Johnny Lightning name got their legs under them and doing well. That is where the Speed Rebels line came in.

10 models, 14 colors, 3 of which were special editions and two exclusive 5 packs. These were priced to compete at the time with Hot Wheels and Matchbox, which would have been a foolhardy endeavor if Tom persisted, but Speed Rebels never intended to be a serious challenge to the blue cards or the orange cards. Speed Rebels were only in the stores for about a year, and then no more...
The image file limits have been reset. Upper limits now are 100,000 when we have some images that exceed 5,000,000. I've set the pixels for no more than 1000 across the longest side, so if you resize to that all should be well. (The limits are larger than what I typically use, and my images turn out just fine, so I know it shouldn't be a problem)

    Thank you for your understanding.

Thought these were kind of neat back in the day, I liked the smaller size, and ended up with I think 3 or 4 colors of each casting bought off the pegs, don't remember ever seeing the 5 packs, but then they might not have included my favorite castings at the time, so could have passed.

Ended up selling off some, needing money during the recession, so as I recall I offered some on MCCH, from memory it seems you may have even been the one who bought a small group I offered there Wes, others a friend sold on ebay for me, but still have a number of favorites packed away somewhere.

    Cool little cars!

I've got a couple from this line but so far Bert refuses to pose with them.

"Too much of a compromise, kid. Next thing, you'd have me posing with Micro Machines."

Speed rebels aren't that small, Officer. Besides, it would be an interesting...

"Slippery slope, kid. Think about it."
      Bert sez...
      "Wanna sell more?
      MAKE IT 1/64!!!"

Wes, I think that I have a copy of the Wing Thing somewhere (put away).
        Thanks for the flashback.

        Cheers. Cobra
